Cafe Sukkara (카페 수카라) - Hongdae

This evening I headed to Cafe Sukkara for dinner with an old friend from college. I don't have any vegan or vegetarian friends in Korea but I'm lucky to have a few friends in Korea who enjoy veggie food, or are at least willing to eat at vegetarian restaurants with me. I heard about Cafe Sukkara from aliensdayout and have been keen to check it out since my early days in Korea, but sadly it has taken me two months to finally get there.

Cafe Sukkara is located in one of the quieter outskirts of Hongdae nearby many other interesting and pleasant looking cafes and restaurants, away from the commercialized and gentrifying mess of central Hongdae. The cafe has a really nice vibe to it, very warm and homey but also a bit alternative. In the center they have a square bar table around the kitchen like you'd find at many typical Japanese style restaurants, but its finished with a nice rustic cafe look. They also have varying table and chair sets around the cafe coming together to create a nice interior. I have to admit though, the vintage chairs we sat at may have had a pretty nice looking design but they lacked comfortable back support.

Although they serve meat, they have several vegetarian options and mark which dishes are vegan. Besides the main dishes they also have a range of sides, desserts, alcohol and other drinks. I'll have to come back to try one of their vegan desserts and soy drinks. We both went for the natural yeast bread and vegetable soup served with chicpea salad and tofu spread, but a few of the other options also appeared to be vegan upon request. I always find dishes made up of several parts to be enjoyable as your able to taste and combine individual flavors. The vegetable soup was nice and creamy and went well with the two types of bread, with or without the subtle but pleasant tasting tofu spread. My friend described the spread well as unsalty cream cheese.

Afterwards we headed to the The Blue Bread bakery and cafe, i'll be sure to post a great review of them soon. But anyway, I really enjoyed the unique atmosphere and food style of Cafe Sukkara so even if you aren't in the area I suggest you to give them a try! It seems to be a great place for a meal, a glass of wine, or a cup of coffee with friends or just by yourself.
