I have come to Korea to study a semester at Yonsei University as an exchange. Studying and living in the area you'd think i'd hang out in Sinchon a lot, but to be honest I find this popular youth area pretty dull. I find little interesting things to do in the area, most of the restaurants seem to be bbq, chicken or seafood restaurants whilst all the cafes are chains. The shops likewise are all overpriced chains, and there is little unique character of the area which you can't find on any main road throughout Seoul. That's why I was glad to have found New York B&C in Sinchon in my first few weeks in the area.
New York B&C is located in the north eastern area of Sinchon heading towards Edae. They sell baked goods and a few Italian style groceries at the front, I'm not sure if there baked goods are vegan but there are some vegan goods like pasta and tinned tomatoes on the shelves.
They have a decent sized menu including several vegetarian and vegan options like pasta, pizza, salad and croquettes and fries. The counter staff are quite friendly and are stationed just next to the kitchen so are willing to help answer questions about the menu. Everything is also quite cheap for western food in Korea, a pasta will set you back around 7000-9000 won.
The decor is not overly special and a bit standard, but with the dim lighting, pleasant music and comfy chairs I find it a really relaxing place to dine out. After my meal here I would've been happy to have spent the night a sleep on the lounge I had perched upon.
This time I ordered the mushroom oil pasta whilst my omni friend ordered one of their all day brunch sets. Agh but I forgot to ask if there was any cheese in the pasta and unfortunately it was topped with a little sprinkling of Parmesan I had to brush off :(. The last time I was I ordered the vegetarian tomato pasta and they said it didn't have cheese so I wrongly assumed all pastas had no cheese. But anyway, the pasta was quite simple but still pleasant and certainly worth the money. It would've been nice if it was served with a little bit of bread though, to soak up some of the mushroom oil. Next time I come i'll have to check if any of their bread is vegan.
If you're after some veggie friendly western food in Sinchon, or perhaps just something which isn't a major chain and actually has some character then I certainly recommend a trip to New York B&C.
Do you happen to know any other nice places in Sinchon? I'd love to know if there is anything else decent in the area.
